And the award for best vampires goes to....

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES!!!!

Sorry Twilight and your oh-so-terrible, make-me-cringe acting. Twilight is just a disaster all around. The books were never that good, but they were a nice guilty pleasure read which I can no longer enjoy. Now if I even try to read them all I see is Kristen Stewart's horrific performance. She really is the worst actress of all time!

Sorry Trueblood... where you are a pretty good show and in most ways a good adaptation of the book series, the casting of main character Sookie Stackhouse and her awful southern accent makes it a little hard for me to watch. Plus, while this is not your fault, since I have read the books the excitement of the series just isn't there for me. You can't have cliffhangers between episodes when the viewer knows what is going to happen.

Now, The Vampire Diaries have succeeded where these other two have failed. The casting is excellent and acting is spot on. These actors truly shine when portraying their alter characters. Specifically the lead lady. She plays both a normal human teenager as well as a vindictive vampire. Both her performances are fabulous.

Plus the characters are more intriguing then a wallowing helpless human girl in love with a troubled protective vampire. Blah blah blah. It's nice to see a couple that seems very in love, but where their entire life is not the other person. Each is strong individual. Plus the "evil brother" that you can't help but love adds so much to the plot line.

Each episode not only is entertaining but adds more to the story, gets you deeper into the characters and their relationships and leaves you wanting more. A true testament to a TV show is the level of excitement you feel after a week when you see the next new episode. Are you ok with just recording it and getting to it when you have some free time? Or do deal with the commercials because you are so excited you have to watch it in real time. The Vampire Diaries is a "real time" TV show for me. I can not wait for the next season to start!!! I think this and Glee are going to replace the void that Lost has left in me. Is it September yet??

Ancient Aliens

Confession: I spent a significant amount of my day watching the series Ancient Aliens on the history channel (one of my favorite channels on TV). Not that I really believe a lot of what they were saying... for instance that humans are in fact descendants of aliens, I mean come on... but it was all very interesting. Using history from basically every ancient culture around the world that at one time or another said they had visitors from the sky. The ancient societies that elongated their skulls (somewhere in Africa, Egypt and Peru) and made their skeletons look strangely similar to our current perception of an alien... very interesting... mostly that these societies came up with this idea separately.

One of my favorite parts was about the Money pit on an uninhibited island in Nova Scotia. Apparently there is some treasure at the bottom that we can't reach, and one of the theories is that it is an alien technology inside the Ark of the Covenant. Some of the other theories are pirate treasure, naval treasure, Marie Antoinette's jewels, treasure of the knights templar, or William Shakespeare's plays. I don't really know if I believe any of those theories but I do believe that something is down there and the want-to-be-treasure-hunter inside me really wants to know what it is. Hahaha.

The Four Agreements

I love books like these, because even if it is not your religion, they are more spiritual guides... they always have good advice. Usually they are all pretty much the same, as is with the case of The Four Agreements, but they explain it differently.

The first of the four agreements is "BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD". Kind of a "love yourself" thing. Basically be without sin with your word. Kind of goes with Jesus's teaching of "love thy neighbor" or "do not judge". Comes with the understanding that what you say has a direct effect on yourself and your feelings. If you say harmful words you are indirectly harming yourself because the person you say them to will then use harmful words on you. And the same goes for words of love.

The second agreement is my personal favorite. It is "DON'T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY". So true, and such a good way to go about life. This comes with the understanding that whatever anyone says to you is not really about you but about how they are feeling. That combined with the fact that you are the only person that can truly judge yourself or have an affect on how you feel... and if you think you are wonderful then you are and no one else's opinion matters.... then no matter what anyone says you shouldn't take it personally. If they tell you you are amazing... don't take it personally because that will just lead to the need of acceptance by other people. And if they tell you you are crap... don't take it personally, it isn't about you it is about how they are feeling. If someone is filled with love they will tell you good things about yourself, if they are filled with hate they will tell you bad things about yourself. Either way it is about them and not you. I think that if you are able to go through life with this agreement you would be a much happier person indeed... at peace really, and therefore just able to enjoy the gift of life.

The third agreement is "DON'T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS". Again a good thing to live by, this would eliminate misunderstandings which are the basis of most fights in my mind. My favorite part of this chapter was the way this agreement can effect your love life.
"Many make the assumption that "My love will change this person". But this is not true. Your love will not change anybody. If others change, it's because they want to change, not because you can change them. Then something happens between the two of you, and you get hurt. Suddenly you see what you didn't want to see before. We don't need to justify love. Real love is accepting other people the way they are without trying to change them. If we try to change them, this means we don't really like them. Of course, if you decide to live with someone, it is better to make that agreement with someone who is exactly they way you want him or her to be. Find someone whom you don't have to change at all. Also, that person must love you just the way you are, so he or she doesn't have to change you at all. If others feel they have to change you, that means they really don't love you they way you are."

Finally the fourth agreement is "ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST". This for me just means if you always do your best you will never have any regrets. And that is what I strive for in life, to live without regrets.

All in all The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz is an interesting book with a different take on some of the oldest spiritual teachings about how to live. Treat others how you would want to be treated. The ten commandments. Love thy neighbor. And now we have the Four Agreements. All are excellent ideas to live by and all will lead to a happier more enriched life.

Accents galore...

This video is kinda crazy... one chick doing 21 accents... and each one is dead on. If you get past the creepiness of this girl and just pay attention to the accents its pretty spectacular. I personally is impressed with the Cali accent, being a Cali girl myself. I didn't realize we had such a pronounce accent till I saw this video. Haha. She was missing the latin and asian accents, with those this video would be complete.

Freeway Etiquette 101

Hello kiddies, today we are having a lesson in driving etiquette on the freeway....

Rule #1: Cars in the lanes to the left move faster, hence the alias of the farthest lane to the left is the "fast lane".

Taking into consider rule #1, if you are driving at the same speed as the car to your right and there is light to zero traffic on the road then you should proceed to move to the lane on your right or increase your speed. If the car behind you is "riding your ass" or "tailgating" this is not because he/she likes to follow closely to the car infront of them, it is instead a not so sly way of saying "get the F out of the way". There are reasons freeways have multiple lanes and there are reasons for rule #1. Everyone has a speed they are comfortable driving at on the freeway, and it is understandable if someone prefers to go 60mph or 90mph. It is not my place to judge. All I'm saying is, conform to the freeway code. Don't get offended if someone wants to go faster then you. It is easier and safer for all drivers for the slower driver to move to the right then the faster driver passing people at high speeds. Plus it is just annoying.

Oh and PS. this rule specifically applies to the 5 freeway. 2 lanes and a million mile long in the middle of freaking no where. Yeah... slow drivers get to the right and let speedy gonzalez there pass you by and all will remain happy.

Lesson over. You are dismissed.

A Day in Florence

It's 6:30 and my alarm is going off. Usually this sound at this time is nails on a chalkboard for me, but for some reason my internal clock is different in Florence. The early hours of the morning are not torture to me. No snoozing or setting 3 alarms at 15 minute intervals. At the first buzz I am wide awake and raring to go.

After an hour I head down stairs to the streets of Florence. My apartment is on the other side of the river so I have a good 30 minute walk to school, a walk I now think back to and treasure. One of the million fresh fruit and vegetable stands lay one block from my apartment. Every morning I would purchase a piece of fruit there for my walk. Usually an apple.

Every day I crossed the Ponte Vecchio and admired the beautiful jewelry of the vendors. I walked along the cobble stone roads and felt transported back in time. Is it possible for a place to feel ancient and new and alive at the same time? If it is that is how Florence was for me. It felt like an old movie be played in the present.

I passed by street painters starting their chalk art for the day and street vendors laying out their products. I always stopped into this one cafe for my morning espresso. 1 euro per cup. And occasionally had a pastry if I felt like treating my self. Italian espresso is like heaven in a cup. The hot smooth drink just bursts with flavor in your mouth and warms your insides as it goes down. Italy was the starting point for my coffee addiction, something I still suffer from.

Then to class. I took Italian art history, one of the best classes I have ever taken. My teacher was this small, quarky German lady whose passion for art was extremely contagious. I could listen to her talk about a work of art for hours... and often did.

Today we learned about The David. The most famous sculpture of all time, and rightly so. Michelangelo's David is epic in every sense of the word. It began when a huge piece of marble that was meant for the construction of a church had a huge crack down the side, therefore rendering it useless. It was too big to move so they left it in the middle of the main piazza. Soon there after arose an unofficial competition among the local artists to see if anyone could actually create something out of this, excuse my language, piece of shit chunk of marble.

In walks Michelangelo and all his amazingness and he goes and carves the David out of it. The first publicly nude statue of the Renaissance and the first depiction of David before the fight. He was also carved during a period of time when Florence was being run by the powerful Medici family. They were never officially in power, but they ran the place and the republic had had enough. They adopted the David as their mascot, as their inspiration, as the symbol of their revolution... that in fact the powerless and seeming weak republic can overthrow the might of the Medici family just as David had defeated Goliath. The statue was an icon for decades.

After our history lesson, we took a trip to the Academia, where he is today. As I walked through the doors and gave my ticket to the attendant, I turned my eyes and saw him. I think I stopped breathing for a bit. Stood frozen to take everything in. There he was, at the end of this massive hall before me, smooth granite floors and the side walls lined with Michelangelo's unfinished slave sculptures almost acting as David's guards.

As I walked down the hall I could sense that the ceiling was maybe 30 feet high or more, probably decorated with paintings but I never knew. I only had eyes for him. He grew with every step I took till he stood towering over me. He must have been 40 feet tall. More massive then I had ever imagined. Backdropped by this dome with lights shinning down on him from all angles which only made him seem even more majestic. Everyone has seen pictures of him, but today I learned how sometimes a picture is not worth a thousand words. Words nor pictures could accurately portray the feeling of awe and humbleness that you get when in his presence.

The David is perfect. Every muscle, every detail. The rock in his hand and the concentration and thought behind his face, contemplating the task that lie before him. The smooth, white marble showing his strength and fragility at the same time. This statue is what art is all about. Never in my life have I been more taken aback by a piece of art. It is a sin of the deepest depths to make the journey to Florence and not visit him.

After class I took a walk through the town and found a nice little restaurant to eat at while admiring the Duomo. A perfect place to people watch and enjoy the gem of Florence. The world's largest free standing Dome. Again... awe.

I order a simple pizza, tomato, mozzarella and oregano. No matter how many meals I had in Italy I was always surprised by how much taste came from simple ingredients. Is there something in the soil or the water here that brings out the taste in the food? Every meal made you just sink into each bite and savor the flavor. I noticed I ate slower there as well... probably because I wanted the food to last forever.

Now time for my afternoon gelato. Mouth watering, stomach growling, eyes widening.. just thinking about it. Porque No? was hands down the best gelato in Florence. Today I decided on hazelnut. It just melts in your mouth releasing the yummy goodness that can only be described as Italian gelato. Italian gelato... need I say more.

At night my roommates and I would grab a bottle of wine and head to the Ponte Vecchio where a guy performed every night, delighting us with wonderful Italian music. It set the perfect mood as we enjoyed our Tuscan wine over the river and under the stars.... watching the tourists hustle about and gossiping about the hot Italian men.

What I wouldn't give to go back to that life.

Florence, I miss you and everything you had to offer me. We had an amazing love affair and I only hope we meet again soon and pick up where we left off. Thinking of you always, Your Gina
