Finances

When you are faced with financial problems you learn exactly what is important to you in your life and the luxuries that are essentially unecessary. I for one have learned that food really isn't as important as I thought it was, and the top priorities in my life are traveling and booze (well partying).

I am making crap in Costa Rica right now, and every penny I spend I think about. Is this really worth it? Do I really need that? ... it's actually a very sensible way to live. I've learned that I can survive on top ramen, fruit, eggs and tuna if that means I get to travel and party with my friends. And actually sacraficing food hasn't been all that difficult. It's almost like it's not even an option for me to eat well, or eat out so I don't think about it.

Pura vida! ay! ... life is short... might as well make the most of it... and for me that is traveling on the weekends while I am lucky enough to live in this beautiful country.

My World Cup Story

Also referred to as "My Claim to Fame". This is easily the best story of my life.

I studied in Florence the summer of 2006 when the world cup was in Germany. Knowing this I booked a flight from Pisa to Berlin the weekend of the championship along with a hostel for saturday and sunday night. Friday night was booked so I just planned on spending the night in the airport.

I was reading at a cafe in the Pisa airport when these 3 old men sat at the table next to me. Having just bought a bunch of Italian flags and shirts they were getting all excited over the game. I smiled at one of them who started talking to me in Italian.

"Oh I'm American, I don't speak Italian" I said as he then snubbed me off as a stupid American who doesn't know anything about the world cup. Who is he to judge me... and so quickly? I then pulled out an Italian jacket I had bought to show my support for Italy during the game. The 3 old men's spirit sky rocketed when they saw it. Amazing how a little jacket can change your life.

They started talking me to all excitedly saying stuff like "France doesn't have american girls cheering for them, we are definitely going to win"

They asked me where I was going...

"I'm heading to Berlin for the game."

"Are you going to the game?"

"No, just going to cheer Italy on and party."

"Well do you want to go to the game."

My heart stopped when I heard this, could I be THAT lucky? they have an extra ticket?
"I would LOVE to go to the game. Do you have an extra ticket?"

"Well no, actually right now we only have 2 tickets, but there are 3 of us and we all want to sit together so we are going to get tickets on the black market. But we can just get 4 and all go together."

I had heard of the steep price of 5,000 Euro for a ticket to the final game on the black market... right like I had that kind of money... are you kidding? "Oh thank you, but I don't have that kind of money."

"Don't worry we have money."

Wait... did they just offer to BUY me a ticket to the championship game of the world cup... cause I think they did. Of course I just thought they were being Italian. Getting all excited over the world cup, and me, and just saying they would get me a ticket, but really had no intention. But still I wanted to keep an "in" with them... just in case. So when our flight was delayed and they invited me to have dinner with them, I gladly obliged.

During our 5 course meal (I was so full I thought I might throw up... but I kept eating cause I felt bad. How do you barely touch a meal that was bought for you?) it was announced that our flight wasn't going to get into Berlin till around 2am. So the gentlemen called their hotel to inform them they would be late. Then they politely offered their cell to me so I can call my hotel as well. "Don't want to lose your reservation" ... crap. Well this is a little bit awkward.

"Actually my hostel reservation isn't until tomorrow, I am just going to stay in the airport tonight, but thank you."

The horror on their face was epic. I swear they just stared at me wide eyed for a moment then quickly redialed on their phone. "Hello, we need to book another room"

My new friends actually paid for me to stay in my own room at the 5 star Hilton hotel in Berlin. Are you freaking kidding me? This had to be a dream.

The next morning they called me and invited me to breakfast where they brought the 4 tickets to the world cup they had just purchased on the black market. OH. MY. GOD! I AM GOING TO THE WORLD CUP CHAMPIONSHIP!
The whole weekend they paid for me to eat at some of the nicest restaurants I have ever been too... I think I've ate enough food to last a month. They paid for me to stay at the Hilton for friday and sat... then sunday we went to stay at this freaking royal palace... formerly owned by the fredrick II, emperor of germany before world war I... then was used by roosevelt, stalin, churchill, etc. to make the treaty that ended world war II. It was funny... Sunday morning they informed me that we were going to switch hotels and on the way to the new one, one of the guys turned to me and said "You know the first emperor of Germany after World War I?"

Of course I didn't but I just said "Sure. What about him?"

"Well we are going to stay at his house."........ of course we are... ahhahahaha.... by this time I wasn't surprised. These men had been ridiculous like this the whole weekend.

And of course Sunday was the championship game between Italy and France. I can't even describe the atmosphere of the game... everyone was decked out in their countries colors... everyone was cheering and doing their teams chants. It was crazy. Then of course the game was one of the most exciting games I have ever seen... it went into overtime and then penalty kicks. Italy won in the 5th kick and the stadium went nuts. I tried to take pics of the last kick but my camera wouldnt focus cause my hands were shaking I was so nervous. The tension in the stadium during the penalty kicks was intense. and the celebration afterwards I will never forget. I really wish the US had this much pride in our soccer team. OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!!! AHHHHHH!!! I FREAKING WATCHED ITALY WIN THE CUP!!!! I felt the intensity... I saw the head-but... I heard the roar of the stadium... I WAS AT THE FREAKING WORLD CUP!!!!!

On another note.. the flight home was the absolute worst flight I have ever been on and the worst airport experience ever!! My flight was delayed like 3 hours... I was stuck in an airport with no airconditioning and no place to sit. The only good part was I met these two italian guys whom I played cards with to pass the time. (side note... aparently my italian name is gina... janelle is just too hard for them to say haha.) Then we were hearded like cattle to the plane... I really thought I was gonna die from either dehydration or heat exhaustion. Oh well who cares.. I went to the world cup finals for free!!!!!

CAMPIONE CAMPIONE... oh oh OH oh... CAMPIONE CAMPIONE... oh OH oh oh!!!!

Twitter

As an avid user of most social networks I am left perplexed by twitter. I just don't see it's appeal and frankly I think it is the most egotistical and ridiculous social network out there. I mean... it is just there to let people know what you are doing, thinking, etc. And to expect that people actually care that your "off to the gym" or "listening to Kesha in the car" is very I'm-the-center-of-the-world. Is it really necessary to let everyone know what you are doing every minute of the day? Is it really necessary to know what other people are doing every minute of the day? It's just creepy... on both ends.

As for celebrities... even creepier. Fools can't complain about paparazzi anymore cause they tell the world what they are doing all day. Idiots. If you don't want crazy stalker fans or paparazzi chasing you down then don't announce to the world that your "going to the grocery store" or "eating at (blank) restaurant". Let's use our common sense people! And for announcements... concert dates... tv appearances... that's what websites are for.

Our generation has come up with some really great, innovative ideas... however Twitter is definitely not one of them.

Mindless g-chatter between besties

10:35 AM cause like in person you can raise your voice and yell and hand gestures and such
but over chat you just take it out on the keyboard
i think i almost broke a couple keys
10:36 AM its like you think by hitting the keys harder it will emphasize what you are trying to say
Michelle: haha, right
me: not so much, f*cking words look the exact same
maybe they should make a pressure sensitive keyboard
so when you hit the keys harder the font gets big and bold
something like that
10:38 AM Michelle: that would be AWESOME
you should tell apple about that

or make it red
haha
me: totally
10:39 AM Michelle: :) my coworker went wine tasting last weekend and brought me a bottle of wine.. its sitting on my desk right now and im very tempted to pop it open

10:53 AM or wine and beer should be provided by the company like coffee and water
Michelle: hahahahhahhaahahah
me: i think it would be a motivation booster
Michelle: man, if we ran the world...
me: good for company morale
get a subway in the office building too
Michelle: right!
10:54 AM me: and massaging brookstone chairs to sit in
i mean it only makes sense to keep your muscles loose
10:55 AM Michelle: dude...
you know whats funny... google has awesome stuff like that for their employees
i have a family friend who works for google
says is AH-mazing
me: I KNOW
Michelle: they have those little pods that you can lay down in that get completely dark
me: definite necessity in any company that wants to be successful
when is everyone else going to catch on
10:58 AM google is like taking over the world, they must be doing something right
stupid freaking CEOs in every other company

you have to f*cking spell it out for them
GET ME A MASSAGE CHAIR AND I WILL MAKE YOU MONEY!
10:59 AM its not effing rocket science
geez
Michelle: AHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHA

Thankful

I thank God everyday for the family I was given, the wonderful life I have and the amazing friends I get to share it with. I could not ask for more. I love everything about my life and in wake of tragedy I am reminded of how lucky I really am, and how precious we all are. I have been truly blessed in my life, so much so it is hard for me to understand how someone could get to the point where they think that life will never get better, where you would give up, where you would want to end your life. A life that is such a gift. Dealing with depression must be something that can never be understood by people who do not suffer from it. A disease that makes you willingly end your life. I can think of nothing worse. To actually want to die. My heart aches for those who deal with this, and for those whose loved ones deal with this.

To those who have touched my life and been lost to this disease... you are forever missed and know that the world is a little bit bleaker with out you in it.

Music for every mood

I don't know about anyone else, but I listen to different music with my different moods I am in. Actually I have specific songs for any mood, event, feeling... etc. It is amazing how music can bring out certain emotions, or how lyrics seem to be written specifically for you... how they can relate to your life and experiences so precisely. For me, I listen to....

"I think I'm in love" by Jessica Simpson when I have a big crush on a guy... song just makes me smile and feel giddy

"My Immortal" by Evanescence when I am in "the dark place" aka. sad over a boy (freshman year in the dorms whenever we would hear this song playing in one of the girls rooms we rushed in to comfort... it's the sign of heart ache.)

Rascal Flatts on a summer day while driving in my car... feel good music

"Go the distance" by Michael Bolton or "I was here" by Lady Antebellum are my "do something great" songs... my motivational music

"I gotta feeling" by Black Eyed Peas is my pre-party, get-in-the-drinking-mood song... if you want me to go out with you then play that song and I just can't resist. It never fails.

"Listen to your heart" by DHT or any wilson phillips are my shower music

"Do Something" by Britney, "Fighter" by Christina, "BOB" by Outcast and many others are my gym music

Usher, Chris brown, t-pain, etc = my "I wanna dance" music
